The previous vintage earned 93 points from Vinous. SanCarlo Rosso di Montalcino 2024 is the estate's younger, more immediate expression of Sangiovese, made with the same care as its Brunello. The grapes are picked by hand into small crates, destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel. The wine then rests a year in tank and six months in old Slavonian oak casks before a further six months in bottle. It opens with bright red cherry, light spice and floral notes, and the palate is juicy and lively, with fresh acidity, a mineral edge and soft, refined tannins. It's a Rosso with real Brunello pedigree, delicious now with grilled chicken, salumi or a wild mushroom risotto.
In 1965 Fulvio and Renata Marcucci bought a natural amphitheatre of woodland near the hamlet of Tavernelle, on the southwest side of Montalcino, and made their first wines in 1974. Today their granddaughter Gemma makes the wines alongside her father, Giancarlo, from three small vineyards. The vines, 20 to 50 years old, grow at around 1,200 feet on sand, limestone and clay, surrounded by wild forest and olive groves. With just over seven acres under vine, SanCarlo is one of Montalcino's smallest family farms, producing only a few thousand bottles each vintage.
