93 Points James Suckling ;Galea Vernatsch is a classic expression of Alto Adige’s historic red varietal, rooted in the long-standing wine culture of South Tyrol and shaped by the region’s distinctive Alpine terroir. The fruit is sourced from hillside vineyards around Santa Maddalena, just outside Bolzano, where south to south-east facing slopes at elevations of approximately 250–350 metres benefit from optimal sun exposure and cooling mountain influence.
The vines, often 50–80 years old, are planted on well-drained porphyry and gravel soils, contributing to the wine’s mineral precision and aromatic clarity. Vinification is carried out with a deliberately gentle approach: hand-harvested fruit is destemmed and fermented in stainless steel with soft extraction, followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing for approximately seven months in large neutral oak casks.
Galea Vernatsch chilled becomes even more refreshing and precise, enhancing its versatility across a broader range of dishes—including seafood and lighter fare.
