The 2020 Massimo Penna “La Serra” Barolo DOCG is a distinguished expression of Nebbiolo from the esteemed La Serra cru in La Morra, Piedmont. Crafted by Massimo Penna Viticoltore, this wine reflects a commitment to quality and traditional winemaking practices. The grapes for this Barolo are sourced from a 1.5-hectare vineyard situated at 490 meters above sea level in La Morra. The vines, planted between 1978 and 1994, are cultivated with a density of 4,500 plants per hectare, emphasizing low-impact agricultural techniques . The 2020 vintage presents a medium crimson hue and an aromatic complexity featuring notes of exotic spices, herbs, and a robust fruit core. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of fruit, tannins, and acidity, delivering a powerful yet refined experience . This Barolo shows great balance and finesse, offering early approachability but with strong aging potential.
Spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel or concrete vats which helps preserve the character of the vineyard and grape. Extended maceration on the skins—often lasting 3 to 4 weeks—to extract color, tannins, and aromatic complexity from the Nebbiolo grape. Aged in large Slavonian oak casks (botti grandi) for 24 to 30 months, which imparts subtle oak influence while allowing the wine to evolve slowly and naturally.
Minimal filtration before bottling, preserving the wine’s depth and structure.
This traditional approach aims to showcase the elegance, finesse, and longevity typical of Barolo from the La Serra cru, particularly with its high-altitude vineyard origins.
